Cardiovascular and respiratory histology Flashcards
What are the two main ways of dividing the respiratory system?
Conducting and respiratory
conducting moves air in and out, respiratory is gas exchange
nasal cavity, larynx, pharynx, bronchi
What are some of the functions of the conducting portion of the respiratory system?
Vocalization (larynx), olfaction (nasal cavity)
What is the type of epithelium commonly found in the nasal cavity, pharynx, trachea and bronchi?
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
What is the function of basal cells?
Stem cells that replace differentiated cells
found in the basal lamina, become differentiated over time
What is the arrangement of the cilia in the microtubules?
2 central single tubules with 9 doublets around the peripherally
What are the two layers found on top of the cilia?
Deeper serous fluid found adjacent to the cilia with a thicker mucus on top
What is the mucocilliary escalator?
cilia found inside the conducting airways that beat the mucus up
What kind of cells line the vestibule?
vestibule is the entrance at the nasal cavity (nares)
Lined by stratified squamous epithelium
What are nasal conchae and turbinates made up of?
submucousal connective tissue and serous glands
serous glands add moisture
