Anatomy of Joints and Ligaments (head and axial skeleton) Flashcards
What is the temporomandibular joint?
Between the condyles of the mandible and the mandibular fossae of the temporal bones, it has a synovial condylar joint that can act as a hinge
What are the sutures of the skull?
immoveable fibrous joints between skull bones that will eventually ossify and become filled with bone
What is the mandibular symphysis?
cartilaginous joint that joins the left and right mandibular bones with little movement
What are the joints of the auditory ossicles?
Synovial joints with ligaments that hold the bones in place
What joins the hyoid bones together?
They are joined by synovial joints, the tympanohyoid forms a fibrous articulation with the skull
What do intervertebral articulations consist of?
cartilaginous joints between the intervertebral discs/ vertebral bodies and synovial joints
What do the intervertebral discs consist of?
An outer fibrous ring with bands of parallel fibres
And an inner pulpy nucleus which acts to absorb shock
What is the atlanto-occipital joint?
The ‘yes’ joint, a modified hinge type synovial joint
What is the atlanto-axial joint?
The ‘no’ joint, a pivot type synovial joint
What is the nuchal ligament?
A yellow-elastic ligament that connects the cranial cervical vertebrae/ skull with the spinous processes of the thoracic vertebrae
In which animals does the nuchal ligament consist of a funicular (cord) and lamellar (sheet) part?
In horses and cattle
Where does the supraspinous ligament run?
It runs over the vertebral spinous processes from T1 to the caudal vertebrae
What are the two ligaments found in the vertebral column?
Ventral and Dorsal longitudinal ligament
Where is the ventral longitudinal ligament of the spine found?
ventral surface from midthoracic region to sacrum
What is the function of the ventral longitudinal ligament?
Prevents over-extension of the spine
