A
comes from renal diseases (increased fluid volume)

what are some different causes of hypertension
A
- primary (essential)
- secondary
- dyslipidemia
- obesity/sedentary lifestyle
- DM
- OSA, HF, CAD, SCA
- meds
- illegal drugs

how will a patient with hypertension present?
A
they wont, usually asymptomatic
possibility of headaches or nosebleeds

what are some complications of hypertension
A
- CVA
- MI

what meds are used for hypertension
A
lifestyle changes - healthy diet - exercise!!!
- thiazide diuretics (HCTZ)
- ACE-I (lisinopril)
- ARBs (losartan) (used if ACE-I is not tolerated)
- calcium channel blockers (amlodipine, diltiazem)
- beta blockers (metoprolol) (decreases HR)
- combo meds (losartan and HCTZ)

what are some nursing considerations for hypertension
A
- prevention
- diet and exercise
- monitor blood pressure at home
- medication compliance

describe monitoring blood pressure at home
A
- same time everyday
- not multiple times
- AHA recommends against wrist cuffs (lower pressure - need brachial artery)
