HDI
The HDI is a measurement system that attempts to reflect the level of human development being experienced in different counties and regions based on social and economic development.
It provides a single statistic based on three dimensions and four indicators
number b between zero and one (0-1). The closer to one, the greater the level of development experienced.
a long healthy life =
life expectancy at birth
knowledge =
-mean years of schooling
-expected years of schooling
a decent standard of living =
GNI per capita
advantages of HDI:
-It provides an indication of the opportunities for education - reflects access to knowledge
-Life expectancy reflects the ability to live long healthy life
limitations of HDI:
-The HDI is based on averages and therefore does not reflect the inequalities that exist within countries
-No survey data is collected, so people feelings about their and issues are not reflected
-The HDI only reflects selected aspects of human development therefore does not capture the richness and depth of human development. Eg. gender equality and access to resources such as water, social security aren’t considered.
