differences + relationships between models Flashcards
Explain the difference between old public health and SMH(new public health)
Old public health focuses on infectious diseases such as influenza and measles whereas the SMH focuses on lifestyle diseases such as CVD and type 2 diabetes.
Explain the differences between BMH and SMH
The BMH focuses on the biological aspects of diseases and ways to treat and diagnose them whereas the SMH targets the sociocultural and environmental risk factors for disease and tries to prevent them such as low SES.
Relationship between the biomedical and social models of health
these models work together to prevent conditions and diseases where we can and treat diseases we cant.
Consider cardiovascular disease:
Social model - factors such as lack of physical activity, smoking and poor diet can be addressed by the social model to help prevent cases from occurring.
Biomedical model - interventions can be put in place to reduce the impact that CVD has on an individual, such as blood pressure medication or surgery such as a bypass to restore blood flow.
