Global distribution and marketing of tobacco, alcohol and processed foods. Flashcards
what is global marketing?
The marketing of products and services on a worldwide scale.
what is globalisation?
Globalization is the process whereby boundaries between countries are reduced or eliminated, allowing individuals, groups and companies to act on a global scale.
-increasing globalisation
-some can be detrimental to health - tobacco, alcohol, processed foods
tobacco smoking
Lack of education about the effects of tobacco and lack of regulation surrounding the sale of tobacco in low and middle income countries.
tobacco smoking: HS
The population in low + middle income countries are not educated on the negative effects of tobacco smoking. Therefore increasing the smoking rates and conditions associated with smoking such as cancer, increasing mortality.
tobacco smoking: BOD
Increased YLL, premature death due to increase in tobacco related conditions such as cancer and CVD.
tobacco smoking: HWB
Physical health and wellbeing reduced physical fitness, and poor functioning body systems due to illness and disease, they might not have been aware it was due to smoking such as respiratory conditions.
alcohol
Multinational companies are directing their marketing to low and middle income countries making it more accessible. They then use the little money they have to purchase alcohol instead of spending it on education, food, healthcare etc.
alcohol: HS
Those in low + middle income countries may get addicted to purchasing alcohol, using the little money they have left on alcohol instead of spending it on healthcare, education + food. Increasing the risk of developing infectious diseases such as influenza, increasing morbidity.
alcohol: BOD
Increased YLL due to conditions associated with drinking alcohol such as liver diseases.
alcohol: HWB
Those in low + middle income countries spend money on alcohol instead of nutritious food, decreasing the immune system and therefore impacting physical hwb.
Energy Dense Processed Foods
Increased marketing of processed foods by multinational companies to low + middle income countries has seen an increase in consumption as many have moved to major cities (increasing access) and have higher incomes than previously.
Energy Dense Processed Foods: HS
Energy dense process foods have become more accessible for people in low + middle income countries meaning processed food is consumed more regularly. Increasing the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and morbidity.
Energy Dense Processed Foods: BOD
Due to increased access to processed foods due to higher incomes and marketing there is increased YLD from obesity and related conditions such as CVD and type 2 diabetes.
Energy Dense Processed Foods: HWB
Processed foods contain added salt, added sugar that increase the risk of obesity + CVD. meaning individuals cannot maintain a healthy body weight, therefore decreasing physical hwb.
