Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What are 3 ways of reducing body temp
A
- Sweating from glands will evaporate
- Hair lies flat so skin less insulated so more heat loss
- Vasodilation: arterioles bear surface of skin dilate causing more blood to capillaries so more loss by radiation
2
Q
How can you increase body temp
A
Opposite mechanisms for reduce as well as: shivering to make muscles contract so more respiration
Also hormones like adrenaline increase metabolism so more heat produced
3
Q
What controls body temp
A
Thermoregulation
4
Q
Describe ‘in-cell’ hormone transcription factors
A
Steroid hormones cross cell membrane, enter nucleus and bind to transcription factors altering gene expression
5
Q
Describe out of cell hormones
A
Protein hormones cannot cross cell membrane
- Instead they bind to specific receptor in CSM which activates a messenger molecule in cytoplasm
- These activate enzymes which activate transcription factors
