Cells Flashcards
Describe the nucleus
Large organelle - Surrounded by nuclear envelope (contains pores) - Contains nucleolus and chromatin
Function of nucleolus
Makes ribosomes
What is the function of pores
Allow substances (e.g RNA) to move between nucleus and cytoplasm
Describe Lysosome
No clear internal structure
What sort of nucleus do sperm and ovum’s (egg cell) have
Haploid nucleus (restores diploid number at fertilisation)
Function of Lysosomes
Contains digestive enzymes used to break down invading cells or work out components
Description of ribosome
- Very small organelle
- Either floats free or attached to RER
Function of ribosomes
Site where proteins are made
Description of RER
Surface is covered in ribosomes
Function of RER
Folds and processes proteins made at ribosomes
Structure of SER
Same as RER but no ribosomes
Function of SER
Makes and processes lipids
Structure of Golgi apparatus
Group of membrane bound flattens sacs
Function of Golgi apparatus
Processes and packages new lipids and proteins
Structure of mitochondrion
- Double membrane
- inner one is folded to form cristae
- inside is matrix
