FURN - MAT - Metals Flashcards
a type of metal that is composed of mainly iron with small additions of other metals or substances
Ferrous Metals
a type of metal that contains little or no iron
Non-Ferrous Metals
type of metal that is a combination of two or more metals and other substances
Alloys
10 properties of metal (ABCDEFHMTW)
- Age-hardening
- Brittleness
- Conductivity
- Ductility
- Elasticity
- Fusibility
- Hardness
- Malleability
- Tenacity (or cohesion)
- Work-hardening
one of the properties of metal which is a slow hardening process
Age-hardening
one of the properties of metal that has its ability to break under a sharp blow
Brittleness
one of the properties of metal that has the capacity to transmit heat and electricity
Conductivity
one of the properties of metal; ability to be stretched into fine wire without fracture
Ductility
one of the properties of metal; has the ability to regain original shape after deformation
Elasticity
one of the properties of metal that becomes liquid when heated
Fusibility
one of the properties of metal that it has resistance to deformation
Hardness
a property of metal that has the capacity to be extended in all directions without fracturing by rolling, hammering, or beating
Malleability
one of the properties of metal that has resistance to a pulling force
Tenacity (or Cohesion)
one of the properties of metal; hardening if metal while it is being hammered or bent
Work-hardening
a ferrous metal that has iron with traces of silicate ; easily worked and is tough and ductile
Applications: decorative screens, gates
Wrought Iron
ferrous metal that has iron with small amounts of carbon, silicon, and sulfur
Applications: cylinder blocks, piston rings, fire backs, manhole covers
Cast Iron
ferrous metal that has iron with up to 0.3% carbon
Applications: general purpose metal used in bars, rods, sheets
Mild Steel
ferrous metal with chromium and nickel
Applications: cutlery, furniture frames
Stainless Steel
ferrous metal that its composition is varied by the addition of different elements such as nickel, chromium, copper, and manganese.
Applications: saws, chisels, plane irons, scissors, knives, hammer heads, springs
Tool and Alloy Steel
ferrous metal that has high resistance to corrosion
Applications: making sheet steel and metal lathe
Copper-bearing Steel
a non-ferrous metal that is lustrous, silver-white, magnetic, lightweight metal which is very malleable; has good thermal and electrical conductivity
Uses: utensils, furniture and fittings
Aluminum
a non-ferrous metal that’s pure metal; reddish-brown metal; highly ductile and malleable
Uses: hot water pipes, electrical parts, and decorative work
Copper
non-ferrous metal that is pure metal; soft, malleable, and heavy metal. Easy to cut and work, enabling it to be fitted over uneven surfaces
Uses: plumbing, flashings, container linings
Lead
a non-ferrous metal that is pure metal
Uses: substitute for lead in flashings, and linings
Zinc
