CONS - Plumbing Flashcards
the system of pipes, valves, fixtures, and other apparatus of a water supply or sewage system
Plumbing
a pipe from the street water main or other sources of water supply to the building served
Service Pipe
the principal water distribution pipe running from the water meter from which the various branches and risers to the fixtures are taken
Horizontal Supply Main
a water supply pipe extending vertically to one full story or more to convey water into pipe branches or plumbing fixtures
Riser
the water supply pipe between the fixture supply pipe and the water distributing pipe
Fixture Branch
used for control, isolation, and repair of the water distribution system
Controls & Valves
a type of water distribution system when water is provided by the city water companies using normal pressure from the public water main
Direct Upfeed System
a type of water distribution system used when pressure supplied by city water supply is inadequate; compressed air is used to raise and push water into the system; use of water pump
Air Pressure System (Pneumatic System)
a type of water distribution system wherein water is pumped into a large tank on top of the building and is distributed to the fixtures by means of gravity
Downfeed/Overhead Feed/Gravity System
the system of pipes, valves, fixtures, and other apparatus of a water supply or sewage system
Plumbing
a main pipe conduit through which a public or community water system conveys water to all service connections
Water Main
a valve controlling the flow of water or gas from a main to a service pipe
Corporation Stop
a control valve for shutting off the water supply to a building in case of an emergency. installed in a water service pipe
Curb Cock
a vertical enclosure with a removable cover providing access to a curb cock
Curb Box
any valve for shutting off the flow of water or gas from a supply pipe
Shutoff Valve
a device used to measure in liters or gallons the amount of water that passes through the water service
Water Meter
a loss of head or fluid pressure between two points of a pipe across a valve, due to hydraulic friction
Pressure Drop
system of pipes, valves, and fixtures for distributing and using water in a building
Water System
a device controlling the flow of a liquid from a pipe by opening or close an orifice
Faucet
the fluid pressure in a supply pipe at a faucet or other outlet while the faucet or outlet is wide open and water is flowing; expressed in psi (N/sqm)
Flow Pressure
a sievelike device for mixing air with the water flowing from the end of a faucet
Aerator
any device for controlling or stopping the flow of liquid or gas by a movable part that opens partially obstructs, or shuts a passage, pipe, inlet, or outlet
Valve
a shutoff valve closed by lowering a wedge-shaped gate across the passage
Gate Valve
a valve with a globular body, closed by a disk seating on an opening in an internal wall
Globe Valve
a valve permitting a liquid or gas to flow in one direction only
Check Valve
a globe valve having an outlet at a right angle to the toilet
Angle Valve
a valve typically used to regulate a fluid flowing through a section of pipe; a flat circular plate is positioned in the center of the pipe
Butterly Valve
a valve used mainly to prevent loss of priming of the pumps; aka “retention valve”
Foot Valve
used on water systems, heating systems, compressed air lines and other pipe lines with excessive pressure
Safety Valve
