Air Pressure System (Pneumatic System)
a type of water distribution system wherein water is pumped into a large tank on top of the building and is distributed to the fixtures by means of gravity
Downfeed/Overhead Feed/Gravity System
the system of pipes, valves, fixtures, and other apparatus of a water supply or sewage system
Plumbing
a main pipe conduit through which a public or community water system conveys water to all service connections
Water Main

Corporation Stop
a control valve for shutting off the water supply to a building in case of an emergency. installed in a water service pipe
Curb Cock

Pressure Drop
system of pipes, valves, and fixtures for distributing and using water in a building
Water System
a device controlling the flow of a liquid from a pipe by opening or close an orifice
Faucet
the fluid pressure in a supply pipe at a faucet or other outlet while the faucet or outlet is wide open and water is flowing; expressed in psi (N/sqm)
Flow Pressure
a sievelike device for mixing air with the water flowing from the end of a faucet
Aerator
any device for controlling or stopping the flow of liquid or gas by a movable part that opens partially obstructs, or shuts a passage, pipe, inlet, or outlet
Valve
a shutoff valve closed by lowering a wedge-shaped gate across the passage
Gate Valve
a valve with a globular body, closed by a disk seating on an opening in an internal wall
Globe Valve
a valve permitting a liquid or gas to flow in one direction only
Check Valve
a globe valve having an outlet at a right angle to the toilet
Angle Valve
a valve typically used to regulate a fluid flowing through a section of pipe; a flat circular plate is positioned in the center of the pipe
Butterly Valve
a valve used mainly to prevent loss of priming of the pumps; aka “retention valve”
Foot Valve
used on water systems, heating systems, compressed air lines and other pipe lines with excessive pressure
Safety Valve
a type of faucet that operates by the compression of a soft packing upon a metal sheet
Compression Cock
a type of faucet that operates with a round tapering plug ground to fit a metal sheet
Key Cock
a type of faucet that is constructed with a ball connected to the handle
Ball Faucet
any of various receptacles for receiving water from a water system and discharging the liquid waste into a drainage system
Plumbing Fixture
a fixture consisting of a ceramic bowl with a detachable, hinged seat and lid and a device for flushing with water
Water Closet/Toilet
a flushable fixture used by men for urinating
Urinal
a toilet bowl having a simple washout action and emptying through a small, irregular passage; costs less but is least efficient and the noisiest
Wash-Down
a toilet bowl similar to the siphon-jet, but having a smaller water surface and trap way; trap located at the rear hence the term “reverse”
Reverse Trap
a toilet bowl in which the flushing water enters through the rim and siphonic action initiated by a water jet draws the contents of the bowl through the trap way; quieter flushing action, less likely to clog
Siphon Jet
a toilet bowl similar to the siphon jet but having the flushing water directed through the rim to create a vortex that scours the bowl
Siphon Vortex
a toilet bowl when a flushing action is obtained directly from a flush valve connected into the bowl
Direct Flush Valve
a system of pipes, traps, and other apparatus for conveying sewage, waste water, or rainwater to a public sewer or a private treatment facility
Drainage System
any pipe or channel by which a liquid is drawn off
Drain
any pipe carrying the discharge from plumbing fixtures other than water closets or urinals
Waste Pipe
system of pipes supplying a flow of air to or from a drainage system or providing circulation of air within the system to protect trap seals from siphonage and back pressure
Vent System
a u- or s-shaped section of the drainpipe in which liquid remains and forms a seal for preventing the passage of sewer gas without affecting the normal flow of wastewater or sewage through it
Trap
a vertical waste pipe or vent pipe serving a number of floors
Stack
any part of the piping system other than a main, riser or stack
Branch
the lowest part of a drainage system that receives the discharge from soil and waste stacks inside the walls of a building sewer
Building Drain/House Drain
a drain connecting to a public sewer or private treatment facility
Building Sewer/House Sewer
minimum slope or pitch of horizontal drainage pipe
2% or 20mm/m (1/4” per foot)
a hollow cylinder of metal or plastic used for the conveyance of water, steam, gas, or other fluid material
