Fungi Flashcards
What are the three types of fungi?
Moulds
Yeasts
Mushrooms
How do fungi survive?
Secrete hydrolytic enzymes
They are either saprophytic or parasitic
Fungi are anaerobic. True or false?
False - usually aerobic, some are facultative anaerobes
Fungi cell wall is composed of 80-90% polysaccharide. True or false?
True
What are good selective targets for drugs in the cell wall of a fungi?
Chitin - found in moulds
Mannans - found in yeast
In the cell membrane fungi have cholesterol. True or false?
False - they have ergosterol
Why is ergosterol a good target for drugs?
Humans don’t have ergosterol in the cell membrane, they have cholesterol
Yeasts are unicellular fungi. True or false?
True
Yeast can only divide sexually. True or false?
False - they can divide sexually (spore formation) and asexually (budding)
What is the shape of yeast?
Spherical, oval or cylindrical in shape
What is the shape of mould?
Consist of branched thread like filaments called hyphae which form mycelium. They are multinucleate
Moulds can be septate or coenocytic. What is the difference?
Septate - have cross walls
Coenocytic - continuous cytoplasm with no cross walls
Fungi have two morphological forms. What are they and why are they advantageous?
Yeast
Mycelial
Reproduction more rapid under adverse environmental stress and provides a competitive advantage
In fungi, asexual reproduction produces offspring that are genetically identical to the “parent”. True or false?
True
During sexual reproduction, mixing of genetic material occurs so offspring exhibit traits of both parents. True or false?
True
