What does Union mean?

A

In a Venn diagram where the two categories overlap plus all of A and B that don’t overlap.

A U B = A + B - A ∩ B

So that you don’t double count the intersect.

Looks like sunglasses on the Venn diagram.

Can also be computed for more than two categories.

What does disjoint mean?

Que signifie “disjoint” ?

A

This means that A is not touching B at all on a Venn diagram.

Two sets A and B having no elements in common are said to be disjoint, if A ∩ B = ϕ, then A and B are called disjoint sets. Example: If A = { 2, 3, 5, 9} and B = {1, 4, 6,12}, A ∩ B = { 2, 3, 5, 9} ∩ {1, 4, 6,12} = ϕ.

In set theory, two sets are called disjoint if the intersection is the empty set or null set. A and B are disjoint sets if and only if A ∩ B = ∅. A collection of two or more sets is said to be disjoint if the intersection of every pair in the collection is an empty set.

What is the symbol of a disjoint set? If A ∩ B = ϕ, then the two sets A and B are disjoint. Here, the symbol ϕ (phi) represents the null or empty set.
