Exam 3: Healing Flashcards
Inflammation
Phase 1 of tissue healing
happens immediately and person tends to favor the affected area.
swelling, redness, heat, pain
(clean if it is an open wound)
Repair
Phase 2 of tissue healing
new cells begin to form and takes about 3 weeks.
scarring, tenderness, stretch pain, or pressure pain may happen
Control the movement if neccessary
Remodeling
Phase 3 of tissue healing
restoration of function takes 3-6 weeks
Can take 3 months to 2 years to fully heal
Avoid further damage by using too soon or too often
What happens in the first stages of Muscle Healing
Uses reserve cells for healing and results in an initial loss of strength.
How does Tendon Healing reflect in the body
Very painful as the tendon becomes weak post injury.
How many days does it take for strength to begin to return with Tendon Healing?
about 10 days
What should be done if the tendon is completely ruptured?
Immobilization will be needed
How long does it take for strength to return in muscle healing?
within one week strength will be near normal and soreness is normal
How long does it take for ligament healing?
Sprains take about 2 years to fully heal. Strength will be reduced during this time.
Cautions during ligament healing
too much immobilization slows healing but external means may be needed for joint support
What type of healing in the body doesn’t repair itself?
Cartilage healing
What are a clients options for cartilage healing?
Joint replacement or cortisone shots
Cells cannot be regenerated in this type of healing
Nerve healing
What type of fiber Does regenerate?
Nerve fiber
What happens with nerve loss?
can result in a loss of sensation and possibly the loss of function if many nerves are damaged.
What are the 5 stages of bone healing?
Hematoma Cellular Proliferation Callus Formation Ossification Remodeling
At what bone healing stage is blood delivered to the area?
Hematoma
What happens during cellular proliferation?
cells begin to connect
At which stage of bone healing do many new cells form on the ends?
Callus formation
What does ossification mean?
Stage of bone healing when two ends unite and harden
What is the final stage of bone healing?
Remodeling which then builds the strength back up
What is the role of the OT in healing?
Understand the injury and how it affects the clients. Be aware of how activities may be done with a given injury. Teach compensatory strategies.
Is the OT responsible for treating an injury?
No; it is not in the OTs scope of practice and a nurse or someone with proper training may be asked to treat the injury.
