Exam #3: Blood Flashcards
What is the normal pH of the arterial & venous circulations?
- Arterial= 7.4
- Venous= 7.35
The venous is slightly more acidic
What is the buffy coat?
The band in spun blood between the plasma & RBCs that contains leukocytes & platelets
What is hematocrit & what is a normal hematocrit?
Percentage of RBCs
- Male= 45
- Female= 40
- Newborn= 55, but then that decreases to 35 in 2 months
Plasma vs. serum
Plasma contains fibrinogen, serum does not
Thrombocytes
Platelets
Polycythemia
RBC numbers above normal
Anemia
RBC numbers below normal
What are the two major transmembrane proteins of RBCs?
- Glycophorins (unknown function)
- Band 3= antiporter of Cl- & HCO3-
Band 4.1
Anchors the cytoskeletal components by complexing with spectrin, glycophorin, & actin
Band 4.2
Associated with Band 3
Adducin
Promotes the actin-spectrin association
Hereditary Spherocytosis
Mutations in:
- Ankyrin
- Band 3
- Spectrin
- Band 4.2
Lead to a spherically shaped cell that is sequestered and destroyed by the spleen leading to anemia, jaundice, & splenomegaly
Elliptocytosis
Mutations in:
- Spectrin
- Band 4.1
- Glycophorin C
Howell Jolly Bodies
- Basophilic nuclear fragments in the cytoplasm of erythrocytes
- Indicative of hemolytic anemia, dysfunctional spleen, s/p splenectomy
- Macrophages remove & cell goes into normal circulation
Heinz Bodies
- Erythrocyte cytoplasmic inclusion that is indicative of G6PD
- Macrophages take a “bite” out of it, making a bite cell
