What is Catalase
An enzyme involved in a degrading reaction
What reaction does catalase catalyze
The breakdown of hydrogen peroxide
Define Enzyme
Organic catalysts that speed up metabolic reactions

Reactants in an enzymatic chemical reaction

The end result of a reactant, after a metabolic reaction

The loss of shape and function (Usually of a protein)
Define Synthesis Reaction
Substrates being joined to form a product

Substrates being broken down into a product

Location where the enzyme and substrate form an enzyme-substrate complex
The effect of substrate on enzyme activity
Enzymes only react with certain substrates
EX: catalase and hydrogen peroxide. Without both, a reaction will not happen
Effect of Temperature on enzyme activity
Individual enzymes react best within their preferred temperature. If its to hot or cold the enzyme can start breaking down and work work. In our experiment, catalase prefers the cold.
Effect of concentration on enzyme activity
The more enzymes, the faster the reaction
Effect of pH on enzyme activity
Each enzyme has an optimum pH. Potato catalase’s optimum pH is 7 (Neutral). To high or to low can effect hydrogen bonding and not allow the enzyme to work as it should.
