Exam 2 Ch. 10 Flashcards
Who was gregor mendel
An Austrian monk and mathematician who founded the basis of genetics in the 1860 with pea plants
Why did mendel use pea plants
The gestation period was short
They could self pollinate, or be bred by hand
They are easy to cultivate
What did Medel do and how
He bred pea plants.
Chose true breeding varieties and cross bred them while keeping extensive records of his findings. He came up with 2 laws of genetics
What are mendels laws
1: Law of segregation
2: Law of independent assortment
What does Law 1 mean
Each individual has 2 factors for each trait (One factor from each parent)
What does law 2 mean
Each pair of factors assorts independently of the other pairs
All possible combinations of factors can occur in the gametes
Homozygous
2 Identical alleles
Heterozygous
2 different alleles
Dominant trait
Allele that masks the expression of the recessive allele
Recessive Trait
Will only be a shown phenotype if both alleles are recessive
What is an allele and where are they found
Alternative forms of a gene.
They are found on the locus of homologus chromosomes
What is incomplete dominance
The dominant allele doesnt completely mask the recessive allele and both are shown in the phenotype
EX: Red rose(Dominant) bred to White Rose (Recessive) produced a pink rose.
