Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
types
simple squamous, stratified squamous (keratinized and non-keratinized), simple cuboidal, stratified cuboidal, simple columnar, stratified columnar, pseudo stratified ciliated columnar, transitional
locations of simple squamous cells
mesothelia (ventral body cavities), endothelia (lining heart, blood vessels and lymphatic vessels), lungs, kidneys (glomerular capillary)
locations of stratified squamous (keratinized)
epidermis of skin
locations of stratified squamous (non-keratinized)
lining of mouth, throat, esophagus, rectum, anus, vagina
locations of simple cuboidal
ducts of glands, kidney tubules
locations of stratified cuboidal
ducts of some glands (sweat glands)
locations of simple columnar
nonciliated: stomach, intestines
ciliated: Fallopian tubes, uterus
locations of stratified columnar
pharynx, anus, urethra
locations of pseudostratified ciliated columnar
upper respiratory system (nasal cavity, trachea, bronchi)
transitional
urinary bladder, ureters, urethra
simple squamous function+description
- single layer of flat cells that resembles a tiled floor when viewed from the apical surface; centrally located nucleus that is flattened and oval or spherical in shape
- present at sites where the processes of filtration, diffusion, and secretion occur. not found in body areas subject to wear and tear.
simple cuboidal function+description
- single layer of cube-shaped cells; round, centrally located nucleus.
- secretion and absorption
non-ciliated simple columnar
- single layer of non-ciliated column-like cells with oval nucleus near base of the cell, contains two types: columnar with microvilli at their apical surface and goblet cells
- secretion and absorption, secreted mucus serves as a lubricant for the linings of tracts
goblet cells
a type of simple columnar, modified and secrete mucus at their apical surfaces. Provide mucus for digestive
