epithelial tissue/cells: test 1 Flashcards
What are tissues ?
Groups of cells working together for a common purpose. to cause movement.
Which type of tissue forms internal structure of organs and fills space?
Connective tissue
Which type of tissue covers surfaces, lines cavities, forms glands?
Epithelial tissue
What are the different types of tissues ?
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
What is the large round structure inside the cell that contains DNA?
Cell nucleus
What is the term for the semi fluid inside the cell that contains chemicals and enzymes?
Cytoplasm
What separates the inside of a cell from the outside world ?
Cell membrane
Which type of tissue generates movement ?
Muscle tissue
Which type of tissue sends signals?
Nervous tissue
Which cell shape is wide, long, but flat. (Tile like)
Squamous
What are the general features of epithelial tissue?
1.closely packed cells.
2. Arranged in sheets. (Layers) that may be 1 cell thick or many cells thick.
3. Has an apical surface(upper) and a basal surface(bottom)
4. Has lots of cell junctions to hold cells together.
5. Avascular-no blood vessels in epithelial tissue.
6. Attached to connective tissue by basement membrane has two parts
A. Basil lamina made by epithelial cells.
B. Reticular lamina- made by connective tissue
7. Has a nerve supply, nerve endings can get in between cells of basal surface.
8. Can do lots of cell division, allows tissue to renew.
Which cell shape is taller than they are wide or long. (Like pillars)
Columnar
Which cell shape is the same height, width, and length? (Squarish boxes)
Cubodial
Which cell layer is one single cell layer ?
Simple epithelium
Which type of epithelial tissue is very thin? Ex- alveoli of the lungs forms thin barrier.
Simple squamous epithelium
Which cell layer is more than one cell layer?
stratified epithelium
Which type of epithelial tissue is absorption of nutrients and secretion(mucus). Ex- small intestine
Simple columnar epithelium
Which type of epithelial tissue is used for secretion and absorption? Ex- kidney tubules.
Simple cubodial epithelium
Which type of epithelial tissue is simple columnar epithelium with some cells shorter than others, looks like multiple layers but isn’t. Lines some of the respiratory tract, often ciliated.
Pseudostratified epithelium
Which type of epithelial tissue is more flat at the apical surface less flat at the basal surface. Forms thick barriers for protection. Ex- epidermis in skin.
Stratified squamous epithelium
which type of epithelial tissue is for protection in the urethra?
stratified columnar epithelium
which type of epithelial tissue is in the salivary glands for secretion?
stratified cubodial epithelium
which type of epithelial tissue is in bladder? cells can change shape and rearrange layers to stretch.
transition epithelium
which type of epithelium is modified to secrete fluid?
glandular epithelium
what is multicellular glands?
glands that are made of many cells, the gland grows into connective tissue
which type of gland is only one cell that secretes fluid? ex. goblet cells secrete mucus.
single cell gland
which type of gland secretes fluid into duct?
exocrine glands
which type of gland secretes hormones into blood (no duct)
endocrine glands
