Bone/osseus Tissue test 1 Flashcards
What lives in membrane around bone; does cell division on the bone surface ?
Osteoprogenerator
What is osseus tissue ?
Type of connective tissue
What is formed from 1 daughter cell when osteoprogenerator cells divide; secrete the matrix?
Osteoblasts
What is trapped in the bone matrix in lacuna (holes); job is to keep the bone healthy mature osteoblasts?
Osteocytes
What comes from the immune system; live in the bone membrane surface; job is to dissolve bone ?
Osteoclasts
What is bone matrix ?
Basically cartilage with mineral salts to harden it. Trucalcium phosphate (major mineral), calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide also sulfate and fluoride
What forms the surface of all bones and most of mass of long bones? Solid bone with little space, based around units called osteons.
Compact bone (dense bone)
What is an osteon ?
Cylinder made of concentric rings of bone; hollow at center
What is the term for canals in sides of bone link up to central canals contains blood vessels?
Perforating canals
What is the term for the arches of bone that fill at spaces between osteons ?
Interstitial lamella
What is the term for arches of bone tissue at bone surface; make the bone smooth?
Circumferential lamella
What is the term for the hole at center of osteon for blood vessels ?
Central canal
What is the term for circles of bone that form osteon ?
Concentric lamallae
What is lacuna ?
Holes where lamellae meet osteocytes live here
What is the term for cracks radiating from lacuna; contain projections from osteocytes?
Canaliculi
What is spongy bone ?
Interior of all bones. Most of the mass of non-long bones. Formed by arches of bone called trabeculae that come together to form a sponge like structure with holes and tubes with lots of internal space.
What type of bone is longer than they are wide? ( most limb bones)
Long bones
What type of bone is same height and length
Ex. Carpal bones; mostly spongy bone (squarish)
Short bones
What is flat bone ?
Has a flat shape
Ex- skull bones, mostly spongy bone.
What are odd shaped bones?
Ex- sphenoid, ethmoid, vertebrae, mostly spongy bone
Irregular bones
What are sutural bones ?
Extra bones in the skull sutures (not everyone has these
What are bones in the tendons and what is their job and and an example ?
Sesamoid bones
Job is to help relieve stress on that joint
Ex- patella
What is the term for the shaft of a long bone ?
Diaphysis
What is the term for the ends of a long bone; usually have articular cartilage to make joints?
Epiphysis
What is articular cartilage ?
Cartilage on epiphysis for forming a joint
What is metaphysis ?
Where diaphysis and epiphysis join. bones grow from here
What is the term for membrane around the outer surface of all bones ; has two layers?
Periosteum
What is the fibrous layer ?
Outer layer made of dense irregular connective tissue part of the periosteum
What is the inner osteogenic layer ?
Made of areolar connective tissue and elastic fibers. Osteoprogerantor and osteoasts live here. Has capillaries. Part of periosteum
What is the term for the hollow area inside of bone; bone marrow is here?
Medullary
What is the term for membrane lining medullary?
Endosteum
