Enthalpy of neutralisation Flashcards

Q

Enthalpy of neutralisation

A

The enthalpy change when one mole of water is formed by neutralisation between an acid and a base, under standard conditions (298K, all solutions 1 moldm-3, 100 kPa)

Q

Why is the enthalpy change of neutralisation always the same for strong acid and strong base?

A

Same reaction is occurring
H+ + OH- —-> H2O

Q

Why is enthalpy change of neutralisation for a weak acid less exothermic than for a strong acid?

A

because energy is absorbed to ionise the acid and break the bond to the hydrogen in the un-dissociated acid.
