endocrine system Flashcards
endocrine system
contains glands and the hormones they secrete
-primary hormone producers
-maintains internal environment
structures of the endocrine system
pineal body, pituitary gland, thyroid, thymus, adrenal gland, pancreas, testes and ovaries
hormone
chemical messenger that gives information/instructions to cells
-control cellular function, body fluid, secretion of other hormones, behaviors, reproductive cycles, growth and development
examples of some hormones
growth hormone, oxytocin (reproductive systems), melatonin (response to darkness, sleep), insulin (helps turn food into energy, sugar levels), cortisol (stress) and epinephrine (fight or flight response)
type 1 diabetes
insulin-dependent diabetes that is a chronic condition when the pancreas produces little to no insulin
-genetics and some viruses
-no cure but treatment focuses on managing blood sugar levels with insulin
type 2 diabetes
chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar
-body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal levels
-no cure but losing weight, eating well and exercising can help manage the disease but may need to take medications or insulin therapay
audiology clinical correlations
-HL is twice as common in those withe diabetes
-hyper and hypothyroidism have been linked to HL
-individuals with too much growth hormone have a higher likelihood of having HL and/or tinnitus
