Endocrine pharmocology Flashcards
Synthetic hormone used to correct deficiency of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, or testosterone hormone; relieve symptoms of menopause; and prevent osteoporosis in women
hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
Replace insulin in patients with type 1 diabetes or severe type 2 diabetes
insulins
Treat type 2 diabetes by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin or lower glucose levels in blood
oralantidiabetics
One form of hypothyroidism, develops in infants. If not treated, this disorder leads to mental retardation, impaired growth, low body temperatures, and abnormal bone formation. These symptoms usually do not appear at birth because the infant has received thyroid hormones from the mother’s blood during fetal development.
cretinism
Type of hypothyrodism characterized by edema, low blood levels of thyroid hormones, weight gain, cold intolerance, fatigue, depression, muscle or joint pain, and sluggishness.
Myxedema
The most common form of hyperthyroidis results from excessive secretion of thyroid hormones, which leads to metabolic imbalance
Graves disease
characteristics of Graves Disease
Graves disease, also called autoimmune hyperthyroidism, is an autoimmune disease that increases the production of thyroid hormones, enlarges the thyroid gland (goiter), and causes multiple system changes. Graves disease is characterized by an elevated metabolic rate, abnormal weight loss, excessive perspiration, muscle weakness, and emotional instability. Also, the eyes are likely to protrude (exophthalmos) because of edematous swelling in the tissues behind them
This is synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and is responsible for the normal growth of bones, cartilage, and soft tissue.
Growth hormone (GH)
Deficiency or absence of GH
hyposecretion
hyposecretion during childhood slows bone growth and results in underdevelopment of the body (hypopituitarism)
The individual is extremely short (final height of only 3 to 4 feet) but has normal body proportions. Pituitary dwarfism may be linked to other defects and varying degrees of mental retardation. Treatment of dwarfism includes administration of GH during childhood, before skeletal growth is completed.
DWARFISM
Excessive secretion of GH
hypersecretion
(hypersecretion) during childhood causes an abnormal increase in the length of long bones and results in a disorder where the individual grows to be very tall (may attain a height of 8 feet), but body proportions are about normal.
