Digestive system diseases and conditions Flashcards
Inflammation of the intestine, especially of the colon, caused by chemical irritants, bacteria, or parasites and characterized by diarrhea, colitis, and abdominal cramps
dysentery
How was the water in Mexico? Not bad, people say it’s full of parasites but I thought it was decent!
TWO DAYS LATER: OH MY GOODNESS, I shouldn’t have drank the water, my colon is inflammed I have terrible cramps and I have diarrhea!
The water wasn’t decent, I got dysentery!
The colon will sometimes develop small pouches and tears, bulging out and this leads to a condition called diverticulitis
diverticulitis
As cities are full of buildings, ascities is the build up of fluid in the abdomnal (peritoneal) cavity as a result of a disease of liver, kidney or heart!
ascities
Formation of bulging pouches throughout the colon but most commonly in the lower portion of the colon
diverticular disease
Gurgling or rumbling sound heard over the large intestine that is caused by gas moving through the intestines
Boborygmus

paralysis of the rectal muscles
proctoplegia or proctoparalysis
herniation of the rectum
rectocele or proctocele
downward movement or prolapse of the colon
coloptosis
Abnormal tunnel connecting two body cavities, such as the rectum and the vagina, or a body cavity to the skin, such as the rectum to the outside of the body, caused by an injury, infection, or inflammation
fistula

Backflow (reflux) of gastric contents into the esophagus as a result of malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)
GERD
Gastroesophogeal reflux disease
Passage of bright red, bloody stools (usually an indication that the colon is bleeding somewhere) commonly caused by diverticulitis or hemorrhoids but may be a symptom of cancer
hematochezia
Hemorrhoid
hemorrhoid
