Moisturisers
Humectants attract transepidermal water to the stratum corneum and retain it. They include glycerin, macrogols, urea and propylene glycol.
Emollients smooth the roughened surface of the stratum corneum by filling the spaces between dry skin flakes with oil droplets. Some also have an occlusive effect and will reduce transepidermal water loss.
