Bones Flashcards
Alendronate
Bisphosphonate
Decrease bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclasts.
Ibandronic acid
Bisphosphonate
Decrease bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclasts.
Pamidronate
Bisphosphonate
Decrease bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclasts.
Risedronate
Bisphosphonate
Decrease bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclasts.
Zoledronic acid
Bisphosphonate
Decrease bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclasts.
Calcitriol
Also known as 1,25‑dihydroxycolecalciferol and 1,25‑dihydroxyvitamin D3.
Colecalciferol
Regulate calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism. Increase intestinal absorption and renal reabsorption of calcium and phosphate. Promote bone mineralisation.
Calcitonin salmon
Calcitonin is a natural hormone involved in calcium regulation and bone metabolism. It inhibits bone resorption and increases urinary excretion of calcium and phosphate.
Calcium carbonate
Absorption is pH dependent (acidic)
Elemental calcium is higher
Calcium citrate
Absorption is non-pH dependent
Elemental calcium is lower
Cinacalcet
Increases the sensitivity of calcium-sensing receptors on the parathyroid glands to extracellular calcium thus reducing secretion of parathyroid hormone and reducing serum calcium concentration.
Denosumab
Human monoclonal antibody that binds receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) preventing activation of the RANK receptor, resulting in decreased formation and activity of osteoclasts, thus reducing bone resorption.
Raloxifene
Selective estrogen receptor modulator
Estrogen agonistic effects on bone mass and lipid; antagonistic effects at other estrogen-receptive tissues, eg breast and endometrium.
Romosozumab
Binds to sclerostin and inhibits its activity, increasing bone formation and decreasing bone resorption.
Teriparatide
Teriparatide is the active fragment of human parathyroid hormone; it promotes bone formation and increases BMD.
