Econ, Human and Mobe Flashcards
PLAN:
1.) HUMAN –> Women –> UNIMPORTANT
2.) ECON
3.) MOBE
Mobilization of human comparison
In Both WW1 and WW2 in the Pacific, we see the mobilization of human resources (with specific reference to women).
However, the extent to which both wars use women are substantially different.
Mobilization of human evidence WW1
Grayzel – ‘ultimately excluded women’ –> No mobilise female population
–> However, 400,000 in Britain
–> Russia women mobilised on the front lines, but only voluntarily ‘Flora Sandes experienced combat first-hand by choice’ (Grayzel).
–> Percentage of women in Russian industrial workforces grew from 26% to 43% between the years 1914 to 1917.
–> THUS, full mobilisation of human resources (with reference specifically to women) would impact the outcome of WW1, as Germany lost and did not mobilise women.
Mobilization of Human Resources evidence WW2
Women in Japan were mainly confined to unpaid household labor, acting as “wife-slaves” to their husbands.
Female workforce in Japan grew only by 10% between 1940 and 1944, compared to a 50% increase in the US due to 6 million women taking jobs during the war.
In 1944, just half of Japanese women aged 20-55 worked, while over 95% of men in the same age group were employed.
Japan’s insufficient female participation in the workforce might have hindered their war effort and led to their defeat.
Evaluation of Human Resources
. There is more to mobilisation of human resources than just the mobilization of women. Perhaps a consideration needs to be made for economic resources mobilised as well as human in order to truly evaluate the significance of each.
Technology Comparison
In Both WW1 and WW2 in the Pacific, there was a heavy reliance of technological usage in order to decide the outcome of each war. However, the usage of technology was different due to the nature of war.
Tech evidence ww2
US vs Japan in WW2:
US economic advantage allowed for domination in the Pacific theater.
US had far more tanks, aircraft, and large ships than Japan.
Conclusion of the war was due to the development and use of the nuclear bomb, which further demonstrated the impact of technology and economic resources in warfare.
Tech evidence ww1
WW1 developments:
Machine guns (600 rounds/min) and heavy artillery (70% of casualties) were crucial.
Chemical warfare and tanks (1916) were also introduced, as well as advancements in planes.
Naval blockades caused heavy starvation and showed the potential impact of technology in warfare.
