When does knocking on someone’s door become a violation of the fourth amendment?
A
It becomes a violation of the fourth amendment when you enter into the curtilage, and after knocking no one answers the door. You cannot stay there and continue to knock and harass the occupants when you have already taken the steps to get a hold of them.
Things also to look out for :
If they turn off their lights
If they tell you to go away
Do not exceed the scope of a knock and talk, if you take a reasonable amount of time to knock on the door, and no one answers, you must leave the property and therefore exit the Curtilage.
