CN2 Optic nerve Flashcards
What is cranial nerve 2?
Optic nerve
What covers the CN2 optic nerve? Why?
Meninges
because it arises from the forebrain
What does the CN2 optic nerve innervate?
Retina
What is the route of the CN2 optic nerve from its innervation to origin?
From optic disc passes through optic canal runs to optic chiasm forms optic tracts to primary visual cortex in occipital lobe
What is the optic disc?
Where the optic nerve meets the retina
Where is the optic chiasm located?
Superiorly to the pituitary gland
What happens at the optic chiasm?
Fibres from the right and left optic nerves mix
What is the function of the CN2 optic nerve?
Special sensory - vision
How is the optic disc looked at during examination?
Opthalmoscope
What is papillodema?
Swelling of the optic disc
What causes papilloedema?
Increased intracranial pressure
pressure transmitted through meninges of optic nerve
What does damage to the CN2 optic nerve result in?
Loss of vision in ipsilateral eye
What does damage to the optic chiasm result in?
Loss of vision in both eyes
How does a pituitary tumour affect the optic chiasm?
Compresses the optic chiasm
How does a pituitary tumour compressing the optic chiasm present?
Bi-temporal hemi anopia
meaning tunnel vision
