Describe the movement between the 4 stages of the client-trainer relationship?
1) Rapport - client and trainer build a relationship of mutual understanding and trust.
2) Investigation - they review the client’s health and fitness data, any available test results, medical clearance info and clients goals and exercise history.
3) Planning - the PT begins to design a program with the client using both good listening and teaching skills.
4) Action - the client is ready to start exercising and the PT starts to effectively teach new motor skills.
What should your voice quality be as a PT?
confident and firm as to communicate professionalism
What body position is acceptable when talking to a client?
Leaning slightly forward and keeping arms uncrossed.
What type of info is gathered during the investigation stage of the client-trainer relationship?
medical concerns fitness assessment results body weight exercise history likes and dislikes
What is effective listening?
listening closely and carefully to both the words and emotions
Personal trainers also demonstrate good listening by answering in what ways?
- encouraging the client to continue speaking by nodding their head or using phrases such as ‘I see’ ‘I know what you mean’ and yes
- paraphrasing their statements to allow the client to correct you if you have misunderstood
- asking open-ended questions at appropriate times to clarify points or move the convo in a productive direction
- reflecting by restating the main points and feelings in the client’s communication
- summarizing key points that have a bearing on exercise program design
In what way should a PT limit their self-disclosure to demonstrate good understanding?
By limiting their own involvement to a couple sentences are bringing the focus back to the client at all times.
What steps does the planning stage usually entail?
- setting goals
- generating and discussing alternatives
- formulating a plan
- evaluating the exercise program
What is the difference between a process goal and a product goal?
process goals are ones that the client does such as completing 5 workouts in a week
product goals are achievements such as losing 5lb
What are some emotional health indicators for SMART goal setting?
improvements in mood, energy, stress and sleep
What are some fitness indicators for SMART goal setting? I.e things you can tailor a goal around
- emotional health indicators
- resting heart rate
- HR during a given submaximal workload
- muscular strength and endurance
- walking test
- flexibility
- balance
- skill level
- medical indicators such as resting BP, blood lipid levels or blood sugar levels
- body weight/size/composition
How could you set health and fitness goals that will motivate clients for long-term adherence?
- Listen carefully to understand what they want to achieve before helping them define SMART goals and suggest additional goals they may not have thought of such as improved energy levels.
- Break large goals into smaller goals and even smaller goals including many process goals.
- record goals and set up a record-keeping system to track progress towards goals.
- reevaluate and revise goals and exercise recommendations periodically to prevent discouragements if large goals are not being met.
What is motivational interviewing?
A method of speaking with people in a way that motivates them to make a decision to change their behaviour.
