species
Why is the offsping of interbreeding often infertile?
Parents with differing numbers of chromosomes form a hybrid with an uneven number of chromosomes
This odd number can not be split by meiosis.
species definition
a group of organisms able to breed with one another and produce fertile offspring.
fact about binomial nomaclature
no two species have the same binomial name. Although some may have the same species name, it doesn’t make them the same thing it just means that maybe the same person named them.
why do scientists classify organisms? (3)
- to identify species ( using a clear and defined system)
- to find evolutionary links
- to predict characteristics ( because organisms in the same group are likely to have similar characteristics)
taxonomic groups
the groups in which organisms were organised.
phylogeny
evolutionary relationships between organisms
what does phylogeny reflect
the common ancestors of organisms
linnean system vs phylogeny tree
the linnean system requires strict grouping, but phylogeny produces a continuous tree.
