What does the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen say?
it sets out basic human rights that governments must not overlook, limits the power of government, freedom of speech, religion, property etc
Whose ideas are included in the Rights of Man?
Voltaire, Montesquieu, Rousseau, the philosophes
What happened with the new French Constitution?
The old system was swept away, all noble titles were declared obsolete, and all people were called citizens
How did the National Assembly treat the church?
They seized control of Church property, issued assignats to be redeemed when Church property was sold.
How did the aristocrats respond to all these changes?
Many fled and became emigres.. emigrants to other countries.
How did these emigres affect the changes in France?
They tried to work outside of France to build support for the restoration of the feudal system
What happened when Louis and his family tried to escape?
They were recognized and arrested.
When questions, what was Louis’ excuse for trying to leave France?
He wanted to obtain foreign aid/assistance to restore his monarchy.
What did Louis’ reasons for escape tell the people of France?
that he was not supportive of their new constitution or their new rights, he could not be trusted
Why was the Legislative Assembly doomed to failure?
There were too many groups struggling for power.
What did the radicals want?
a republic with no monarch
What did the moderates want?
a constitutional monarchy
What did the monarchists want?
a restoration of the monarchy and king’s powers
