Describe the DO of Elqui.

A

This is a DO in Coquimbo, in Northern Chile. It is at over 2,000 meters elevation and is the highest region of Chile. It is a transverse valley that delivers Andean melt water. There are rocky thin soils which are chalky. Only 100mm of rain per year and it is the driest of all the Coquimbo DOs. Syrah does very well in this region.

Describe the DO of Limari.

A

Limari is a DO within the Coquimbo DO in northern Chile. It is right below Elqui and above Choapa. Chardonnay is the #1. The region has a cool climate and red clay atop limestone soils. Syrah also does well here. The region is named for the Limari River. The “Camanchaca” fog affects this region.

This is the least important DO within the Coquimbo DO in northern Chile.

Describe the DO of Casablanca.

A

This region is right below Aconcagua Valley in the Aconcagua DO. The region is positioned at a break in the coastal range making it a beneficiary of the Humboldt Current. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the best suited varietals here. 75% of grapes are white, with Sav Blanc also being widely planted. There are root problems here. Sandy soils are a magnet for nematodes. Cool climate.

This is within San Antonio which is the last region in Aconcagua DO. Cool climate region known for Sauvignon Blanc. Lo Abarca and Rosario are the unofficial subregions of San Antonio. Lo Abarca is the coolest, most maritime subregion and Rosario is the northernmost, warmest and driest.

A

This DO is second only to Maule in total vine acreage, and second only to Maipo in top class red wines produced. There is more Cabernet and Carmenere than anywhere else in Chile. The clay dominated soils are planted to Merlot, and there is also well-drained granite soils here. Apalta is the most important but still unofficial zone for wine.
