The Heiligenstein vineyard and much of the Kamptal has unique soils that were formed 320-250 million years ago by a flash flood. Glacially derived loess deposits are the most prevalent.

Old crystalline consolidated rocks form the steep slopes of the Danube valley. Gfohler gneiss, marbles, are here. The soils were also created by submarine volcanoes. Winds during the ice age carried drifting sand to the east-facing hillsides forming gneiss. The climate is Atlantic influenced from the west and Pannonia to the east.
