CHEM QUIZ TUES Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and volume
Homogenous
-All the same
-Pure and uniform
Heterogenous
-Not pure and uniform
-Different
Substances
-Any matter that is pure and uniformed in composition (homogenous)
Two types of substances
-Elements
-Compounds
Element
-The most basic form of matter that keeps its properties
-Homogenous
-All atoms of the same element have the same atomic number (number of protons)
Can an element be decomposed chemically?
NO!!!!!!!!!!
Compound
-Chemical combination with changed properties
-All samples of the same compound: HOMOGENOUS + have a definite composition
Binary compound
A compound consisting of 2 different elements
Particle Diagram: Monatomic element
-1 type of circle
Particle Diagram: Diatomic element
-2 of the same type of circle
Particle Diagram: Compound
-2 or more different circles combined
Mixture
-Composed of two or more different substances that can be separated physically
-Components in a mixture - retain its original properties + proportions can vary
(physical combination is not changed)
Homogenous mixtures
-Matter that is pure and uniform
-Particles are all the same and evenly mixed
Ex. Saltwater
Heterogenous mixtures
-Particles are not evenly mixed or distributed- they are layered
-Ex. Oil and water
