Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is the first law of thermodynamics? Aka principle of conservation of energy
Energy can be transferred and transformed but cannot be created or destroyed Energy in the universe is constant
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
Every energy transfer or transformation increases the entropy (disorder) of the universe.
Metabolism
The totality of an organisms chemical reactions
Metabolic pathway
Step by step series of interconnected bichemical reactions
Catabolic pathways
Degradative process. Release energy by breaking down complex molecules to simpler compounds
Anabolic pathways aka bio synthetic pathways
Consume energy to build up complicated molecules from simpler ones
Bioenergetics
Study of how energy flows through living organisms
Energy
Capacity to cause change Ability to rearrange a collection of matter
Kinetic energy
Relative motion of objects
Thermal energy
Kinetic energy associated with the random movement of atoms or molecules
Heat
Thermal energy in transfer from one object to another
Potential energy
Energy that is not kinetic Energy matter possesses because of its location or structure
Chemical energy
Potential energy available for release in a chemical reaction
Thermodynamics
The study of energy transformation that occur in a collection of matter
Entropy
Measure of molecular disorder or randomness
