Chapter 3 Flashcards
Polar covalent bonds
The electrons of the covalent bonds spend more time closer to one atom than another
Polar molecule
Overall charge is unevenly distributed
Hydrogen bond
Partially positive hydrogen of one molecule is attracted to a partially negative of a nearby molecule
Four emergent properties of water
Cohesive behavior
Ability to moderate temperature
Expansion upon freezing
Versatility as a solvent
Cohesion
Water attracted to water
Like molecule sticking to eachother
Surface tension
A measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break surface of a liquid
Adhesion
Water attracted to other substances
Substances attracted to other substances
Kinetic energy
Anything that move
The energy of motion
Thermal energy
Reflects total kinetic energy and depends on the Matters volume vs temp reflects average
Temperature
The average kinetic energy of the molecules in a body of matter regardless of volume
Heat
Thermal energy in transfer from one body of matter to another
Calorie
The energy required to raise the temp of 1 gram of water by 1 degree c
Kilocalorie
1,000 cal. Quantity of heat required to raise the temp of 1 kilogram of water by 1 c
Joule
One joule equals 0.239 cal
Specific heat
as the amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for 1g of that substance to change its temp by 1 c
how well a substance resists changing its temp when it absorbs or releases heat
