Chapter 73 :: Panniculitis Flashcards
Adipose tissue functions
energy storage and expenditure, appetite modulation, insulin sensitivity, endocrine and reproductive systems, bone metabolism, inflammation, and immunity
Mostly septal panniculitis without vasculitis
ERYTHEMA NODOSUM
most common etiology in pediatric cases of EN
streptococcal respiratory tract infections
Erythematous subcutaneous nodules and plaques of lower legs; common on calves
Mostly lobular or mixed lobular and septal panniculitis with vasculitis in 90%
ERYTHEMA INDURATUM AND NODULAR VASCULITIS
most common form of panniculitis
occurs with venous insufficiency, mostly in overweight women older than 40 years
LIPODERMATOSCLEROSIS
first-line treatment for LDS
compression therapy
Mostly lobular panniculitis (with or without lymphocytic vasculitis)
Lupus profundus
LUPUS PANNICULITIS
first-line treatment of Lupus Erythematosus Panniculitis
Antimalarials
Systemic corticosteroids are effective and useful if the disease is active and severe, 224 and used as short courses or during antimalarial initiation
Most often associated with dermatomyositis
CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISEASEASSOCIATED PANNICULITIS
most often seen in children after high doses of systemic corticosteroid treatment, days to weeks after abrupt corticosteroid withdrawal
Resolves in weeks or months without scarring
gradual tapering of steroids can eliminate the risk of poststeroid panniculitis.
POSTSTEROID PANNICULITIS
