Monarch appoints PM- a formality where leader of largest parliament in the House of Commons invited to form a government

A
Cannot dissolve a parliament after fixed term Parliament act (2011). Monarch retains a formal role in bringing a parliamentary session to an end.

A
Monarch opens new parliamentary session and delivers speech which sets out the main bills the government intend to introduce that year- written by government

Approval by monarch is the final stage in the legislative process- convention- must be signed by monarch
