Totalitarian Democracy
Citizens can only vote for candidates from the single, ruling party
Majoritarian Democracy
Government is based on the majority support of the population
Consensual Democracy
There is a conscious effort to include all groups, rather than just focusing on the majority
Parliamentary Democracy
Executive is drawn from the elected legislature and is therefore accountable to it
Consultative/Participatory Democracy
Where a more conventional representative democracy incorporates elements of direct democracy (eg. referendums, e-democracy, etc.) with a view to engaging the wider public in the policy making process
Pluralist Democracy
A system of government that encourages participation and allows for free and fair competition from competing interests
Representative Democracy
Citizens elect representatives to formulate legislation and take other decisions on their behalf
Liberal Democracy
Incorporates free and fair democracy with a belief in the importance of key rights, with a widely extended franchise and guarantee freedom of speech and allow people to assemble and petition the redress of grievances
Direct Democracy
Individuals each have a say in every policy matter
