Participation
Encourage political participation and allow members to have a say in policy
Political recruitment
Checks suitability of candidates and allows political apprenticeships for those moving towards higher positions
Policy Formulation
Gives a more joined up organised form of government than without parties
Providing stable government
Without parties commons would just be a gathering of individuals with their own personal goals and ambitions- parties=clear choice
Representation
Represent members’ views. Clear in age of mass membership but because of class and partisan dealingment it’s less obvious now. Also rise of catch all parties
Local level Labour party
Branches select candidates for local election & send delegates to the General Committee of the Constituency Labour Party (which organises the const. level part of the party)
What is main national organ of the Labour party? What are it’s powers?
The National Executive Committee- It has final say on the selection of candidates and oversees policy proposals. Was once the party’s sovereign policy making body.
Local level Conservative party
Branches corresponding to local council wards operate below the constituency level Conservative Associations (CA)

Conservative Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ)

With the European Conservatives and Reformists

With the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats
