The First Party System
the appearance of federalists and republicans. helped organize political parties but americans thought they were dangerous.
XYZ Affair
`confrontation between U.S and republican france. this led to the Quasi- war and congress cut off trade with france
Naturalization, Alien, and Sedition Acts
naturalization- lengthened residency
alien- authorized deportation of foreigners
sedition- prohibited the publication of insults
Kentucky/ Virginia Resolutions
set forth states’ rights interpretation of the constitution.asserted the right to judge and legitimacy of national laws.
Marbury v. Madison
a case decided by supreme court under chief justice john marshall in 1803. fought that a certain law should not be established because it wet against the constitution. established judicial review.
Lousiana Purchase and Jefferson’s reservations
purchase made by the U.S from France for the whole Louisiana territory in 1803. Jefferson made this fearing that Napoleon would want to make an empire in north america.
Impressment and the Chesapeake
a way to replenish a crew. The british used american ship raids as a way to replenish their crew.
Embargo Act
prohibited American ships to leave until British and French stopped restricting U.S trade. This helped protect American interests.
Federalists’ Hartford Convention
convention made by massachusetts federalists in 1814 to lay foundation for a radical reform.proposed a constitutional amendment limiting the office to a single 4 year term, rotating to different states each time.
Treaty of Ghent/ Battle of Yorktown
Adams, Gallant, and Clay wanted territory in norhth aerica but realized it wasnt worth the warfare.signed on christmas eve 1814. retained the prewar borders of the unites states.
Monroe Doctrine
the american colonies were not subjected to further colonization. in return monroe said that the U.S would not interfere with European affairs
Era of Good Feelings
republican party was split into two and everything was peaceful because even though the two parties differed this soon created the second party system.
