Ten Percent Plan vs. Wade- Davis Bill
- Ten Percent Plan made by Lincoln during the Civil War, but never happened. Plan was to forgive the to confederate traders and allowing each rebellious state to return to the Union after 10% of them gave loyalty oath and the 13th amendment was approved.
- Wade-Davis required an oath of allegiance by majority of each state’s white adult men.
Andrew Johnson
common man from Tennessee and built his political career off of support from farmers and laborers. Became Tennessee’s military governor by Lincoln.
Black Codes
plan to force former slaves back onto plantations made by new Southern state legislature after Johnson’s limited Reconstruction plan.
Freedmen’s Bureau
Congress established it to ad displaced blacks and war refugees. Congress soon voted to extend this plan and gave it direct funding.
Civil Rights Act 1866
declared formerly enslaved people to be citizens and granted the equal rights or contract with full access to the courts.
14th Amendment
“all people born or naturalized in the United States were citizens”
Radical Republican
they wanted to transform the south for the better after the 14th amendment
Reconstruction Act of 1867
divided the conquered South into five military districts, each under the command of a U.S. general.
Impeachment of Johnson
Johnson kept suspending people and seemed like he didn’t know what he wanted so the legislatures in the House of Representatives introduced articles of impeachment against the president.
15th Amendment
prohibited the state government from denying someone the right o vote based on their race, colors, etc.
Sharecropping
labor system where landowners and land workers divided the share of crops harvested.
