Plessy v Ferguson and “separate but equal”
Plessy was 7/8 Caucasian and only looked white, and was eventually arrested for not giving up his seat in the train and this case established segregation in the South bc it was brought to the Supreme Court.
Jim Crow Laws
descendant laws from the Black Codes. Applied to public schools and parks it was a segregation law that the Court allowed.
Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA)
earliest and most successful promoters of athletic fitness. Introduced in Boston of 1851 the group promoted muscular Christianity in a place (gym) when men could make themselves clean and strong.
Negro Leagues
segregation was so bad that when whit leagues put in a black player on their team they claimed he was cherokee and soon received a threat which led to them terminating his contract and negro leagues to form.
The Great Outdoors
sports were becoming more popular so outdoor became the new hot spot to be bc everyone enjoyed them.Sierra Club founded by Muir was made to preserve and enjoy the great mountains which then led to the National Audubon Society which helped protect the wildlife.
Changes in family sizes
During the industrial era the normal family size decreased by nearly half the amount. This helped the parents be able to focus on educating the children to become successful.
contraceptives
There were several factors to the limiting amount of children such as marrying at old age and birth control. Birth control was effective and soon became illegal.
Comstock Act (1873)
prohibited any information about sexual intercourse and birth control, won support from the law by appealing to parents that children were learning about sex through the mail. “secret vice” rose and said comstock was an interference in private matters.
Booker T. Washington
Born a slave and was a leading voice fr the black community which could also get through to whites.He understood racism but also thought blacks could be appealing to the whites.
Atlanta Compromise
an agreement made with Booker T Washington and other black/white leaders, but it was opposed by DuBois.
Women’s Christian Temperance Union
goal was to curb alcohol abuse by prohibiting sales. The launched into reform in the late 19th century. first organization to identify and combat domestic violence.
Frances Willard
leader of the WCTU. he knew how to frzme political demands of feminine crowds. His motto was “home protection”.
United Daughters of Confederacy v. the National Association of Colored Women
UDC shaped Americans memory of the civil war by constructing monuments, distributing confederate flags, etc. they helped maintain segregation.
NACW focused more on helping the elderly, temperance, care for orphans and undertook public health campaigns.
Ida B. Wells
thrown bodily out of a train in tennessee for refusing to get up for an all white section causing her to be involved in racial justice.
National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA)
the movement for womens suffrage reunited in 1890. This soon led to women being able to vote in school elections, municipal elections and liquor referenda
