Pendleton Act
established a nonpartisan Civil service commission to fill federal jobs by examination. helped lay the groundwork for a sweeping transformation of public employment which was then extended to cover most federal positions.
Sherman Anti-Trust Act
the first federal attempt to forbid any “combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint to trade.”
The People’s Party (The Populist)
the kansas alliance joined with the knights of labor and created the people’s party. they believed the power of the govt (ppl) should be expanded as rapidly and as far as it can.
Panic of 1893
serious economic depression in the united state. happened because of railroad overbuilding and shakey railroad financing.
Coxey’s Army
coxey organized unemployed men for a peaceful march to the U.S Capitol to plead for an emergency jobs program.
Free silver movement
a policy of loosening the money supply by expanding federal coinage to include silver as well as gold. thought it would encourage borrowing and stimulate industries.
Williams v. Mississippi
supreme court ruling that allowed states to impose poll taxes and literacy tests. by 1908 every southern state had done this.
William Jennings Bryan and election of 1896 (“Cross of Gold” speech)
1896 poster emphasized the youth of the 36 yr olf democrat and includes portraits of his family. With his speech “cross of gold” with silver coins and “16 to 1” referring to ration of silver to gold
Direct primaries and the 17th amendment
direct primaries- asking voters to choose next nominees
17- requiring u.s senator be chosen by popular votes rather than the legislature.
Lochner v. New York
supreme court ruling that new york state could not limit bakers’ workday to ten hours because that violated bakers right to make contracts.
