railroad strike of 1877
protesting steep wage cuts started the depression in 1873 causing railroad workers to walk off the job.
methods against workers: governor’s actions, blacklisting
due to the railroad workers going on strike there had been many death so the governor blacklisted them by putting their names on a “do not hire” list so they couldnt get work in the industry.U.S govt also started the national guard that would not protect americans against foreign invasion.
Henry George/ Progress and Poverty
best seller for decades. in the book he noted that americans had been too optimistic for the industries that they would bring a period of turmoil and emerging industry meant permanent property.
farmers woes
they felt trapped and neglected around all these industries and that high tariffs made them pay too much for the necessities they need.
Grange movement
brought farm families together for recreation and conversation and set up insurance companies, crop elevators ad more.
Greenback Party
protested the collapse of the reconstruction and urged every mans votes to be protected.
Granger Laws
greenbacks became their own party and elected 15 congressmen this pressuring them to make their own laws.
Knights of Labor (Terrence Powderly)
believed ordinary people needed control over their own enterprise, they proposed to open up their own shops to transform america into a common wealth.
Farmers’ Alliance
they arose to take up many of the issues that Grangers and Greenbacks had earlier sought to address.
Interstate Commerce Act
counteracted a supreme court decision of Wabash v Illinois that had struck down states authority to regulate railroads.
American Federation of Labor (AFL)
made up of relatively skilled, and well payed workers, less interested in challenging the corporate than in winning the larger shares of rewards.
Samuel Gompers
led the AFL for 30+ years. he believed the knights relied on electoral votes too much
