Chapter 6 (page 26) Flashcards
What is the major function of the GI tract?
digestion and absorption.
Six (6) processes involved in digestive system:
- Ingestion
- Propulsion
- Food breakdown: Mechanical digestion
- Food breakdown: Chemical digestion
- Absorption
- Defecation
Examples Of mechanical Digestion:
The tongue in the mouth
churning of food in the stomach, segmentation of food in the SI.
__________ - Food is placed in the mouth. It is a voluntary process.
Ingestion
__________ - Food must be propelled from one digestive organ to the next. Food can be propelledby peristalsis
Propulsion
It is involuntary movement involving alternating waves of contraction and relaxation of the muscular layer in the wall of the digestive tract.
Peristalsis
___________ is an example of mechanical digestion more than of propulsion. It helps to move food back and forth across the internal wall of the small intestine to mix it with digestive juices.
Segmentation
It is the movement of primary or secondary organs of digestion to mix food in the GI tract. It prepares food for further degradation by enzymes.
Food breakdown: Mechanical digestion
__________ - elimination of indigestible substances from the body via the anus in the form of feces.
Defecation
________ - Are digested to amino acids
Proteins
________ - Are digested to fatty acids and glycerol
Fats
It is a sequence of steps in which large food molecules are broken down to their building blocks by enzymes. Each major food groups have different building blocks.
Food breakdown: Chemical digestion
What are the three types of Carbohydrates?
monosaccharides
Disaccharides
Polysaccharides
This type of carbohydrates are known as double sugars:
Disaccharides
Monosaccharides are also known as:
Simple sugars
