Chapter 5 Flashcards
Histology
The study of tissues
Four Types of Tissues
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
Apical Surface
Basal Surface
Lateral Surface
Basement Membrane
Gland
Composed of epithelial tissue; secrete substances for use elsewhere or elimination
Exocrine Gland
Invaginated epithelium in connective tissue
Endocrine Gland
Lack ducts; secrete hormone products into intersitial fluid and blood
Merocrine Glands
Package secretions into vesicles; release secretions by exocytosis
Apocrine Glands
Pinch off apical membrane around portion of cytoplasm that contains secretory product; release secretions by exocytosis
Holocrine Glands
Accumulation of a product in a cell leads to cell disintegration (bursting)
Functions of Connective Tissue (6)
Physical protection; support and structural framework; binding of structures; storage; transport; immune protection
Ectoderm
Epidermis of skin, hair and nails; nervous tissue and sense organs; enamel of teeth; lens of eye; pituitary gland; adrenal medulla
Endoderm
Epithelial lining of respiratory tract, GI tract, Auditory tube; reproductive tract, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, thyroid gland
Mesoderm
Dermis of Skin; epithelial lining of blood vessels, lymph vessels, serous membranes, muscle tissue, connective tissue, adrenal cortex, heart, kidneys, spleen, internal reproductive organs
Squamous epithelium
Flat, Square shaped cells
Cuboidal Epithelium
Cells about as tall as wide
Columanar
Tall, narrow cells
