chapter 4 part 4 Flashcards
why does someone, who has type 2 diabetes, blood sugar go up with just a little carbohydrate?
because their cells resist the work of insulin
what should someone do if they have diabetes and notice their blood sugar goes up after a small amount of carbs?
they should first work to dial back fat
what are the consequences of insulin resistance in the pancreas?
the pancreas makes more insulin, extra insulin forces glucose into the cells, pancreas becomes overworked, pancreas becomes infiltrated with fat, some of the beta cells die, now less insulin can be made, blood sugar goes up
what do beta cells in the pancreas produce?
insulin
what is wrong with keto for diabetes?
the excess fat that keto induces is the underlying cause for insulin resistance and so diabetes will become worse
consequences of insulin resistance in the liver
liver infiltrated with fat, liver develops fatty liver disease, liver tries to offload excess fat into the blood, liver can no longer get the message that blood glucose is adequate
if excess fat is in the blood, what goes up in the blood?
cholesterol and triglycerides
because the liver no longer gets the message that blood glucose is adequate, what does the liver keep making and what happens?
the liver keeps making more glucose and the blood levels of glucose go up
what are some disease caused by insulin resistance? (or made worse)
cancer, type 2 diabetes, alzheimers and parkinsons, inflammatory disease, hypertension and heart disease
what is the nutrition prescription for diabetes?
r-educe fat, animal foods, and -processed foods
-reduce sugar and processed carbs
-lose weight
-eat a plant based diet
what does fasting blood sugar measurement indicate?
blood sugar control now
what does hemoglobin a1C measure?
blood sugar control for past 3 months
diabetes prevention program subjects
pre-diabetes people
what did diabetes prevention program show us?
-a little weight loss makes a big difference
-small lifestyle intervention works better than medication
who were the subjects of DIRECT study?
diabetic people
