Chapter 4: Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Simple Squamous Epithelium
*A simple layer of flat cells.
*Functions: secretion/absorption/ reduction in friction and diffusion.
*Locations: lines alveoli, body cavities, heart chambers, and blood vessels.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
*A single layer of cube-like cells.
*Functions: Secretion and absorption
Location: kidney tubules, coverings of ovaries and endocrine glands and their ducts.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
*A single layer of tall cells
*Functions: secretion, absorption, and protection.
*Location: Lines the digestive tract.
**Often has microvilli on the apical surface.
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium
*Single layer of cells but different heights.
*Function: Protection, secretion, and movement of mucus with cilia.
*Location: Lining of the upper respiratory tract and part of the male reproductive system.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
*Cells are flatter on the apical surface, basal cells are more like cubes. Top cells look dead (full of keratin)
*Function: Found as a protective covering where friction is common.
*Location: Skin, mouth, esophagus, and the lining of the vagina.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
*Two layers of cuboidal cells
*Function: Protection, secretion, and absorption.
*Location: Found in ducts of large glands.
**Rare in the human body.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
*Apical cells are columnar, varying in size.
*Function: protection
*Location: Pharynx, male urethra, glandular ducts.
Transitional Epithelium
- The shape of the cells depends upon the amount of stretching.
*Function: Stretching
*Location: Lines the organs of the urinary system (bladder)
