Chapter 4: Connective Tissue Flashcards
Loose (areolar) Connective Tissue
*Matrix: Syrupy
*Cells: Fibroblast, Macrophages, adipose, and mast.
*Function: Wraps and cushions organs and soaks up excess fluid.
*Location: beneath the epidermis
Adipose Tissue
*Matrix: gel-like
*Cells: Adipocytes
*Function: Energy storage, insulation against heat loss, and protection of vital organs.
Brown adipose
Cellular respiration creates a lot of ATP, and heat as a byproduct is then used by infants who cannot shiver to maintain their body temperature.
Reticular Connective Tissue
*Matrix: Syrup
*Cells: Fibroblast
*Function: Internal supporting network
*Location: forms stroma of lymphoid organs, spleen, bone marrow, liver and lymph nodes.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
*Matrix: Syrupy
*Cells: Fibroblast
*Function: Resist tension in only one direction.
*Location: Tendons and ligaments.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
*Matrix: Syrupy
*Cells: Fibroblast
*Function: resist tension in all directions!
*Location: Dermis of the skin, capsule around liver, kidneys, spleen, joint cavities, wraps around cartilage on bones.
Elastic Tissue
*Matrix: Rubbery
*Cells: Fibroblast
*Function: stretchy
*Location: nose, ear, and epiglottis. Walls of large arteries such as the aorta. and to help stabilize the spine.
Blood
*Matrix: Watery
*Cells: white and red blood cells and platelets.
*Location: Blood vessels and heart.
